Are you tired of replacing consumable 3D printer screens after a certain number of hours? With this Voxelab 3D printer, you’ll get an 8.9-inch mono 4K resolution screen that lasts longer and prints faster than most other resin 3D printers.

VoxelLab Proxima 8.9 can deliver great but not the best print quality at high speed. However, I am sure this 3D printer can meet your expectations regarding most of your 3D printing projects

In this Voxelab Proxima 8.9 review, I will look at all aspects of this 3D printer, from its print speed and performance to its connectivity and more. So if you’re on the hunt for a high-quality 4K mono LCD resin printer, be sure to read on!

About Voxelab Proxima 8.9 4K Mono LCD Resin

Voxelab is one of the sub-brands of Flashforge, one of the leading manufacturers of professional 3D printing equipment and materials. It is primarily focused on researching, designing, and producing 3D printers and related products.

The Voxelab Proxima 8.9 is a high-quality 4K mono LCD resin printer that works with Chitubox and VoxelPrint software.

One of the most significant advantages of this 3D printer is the lifespan of its 4K monochrome LCD resin screen — it is four times longer than the lifespan of RGB screens. Moreover, thanks to its large print volume, it eliminates riffles on final prints.

In terms of price, it is worth mentioning that this might be one of the cheapest resin 3D printers of the cheapest mid-size resin 3D Printers. It is priced at roughly £301.

Features

8.9-inch 4K Monochrome LCD Screen

The Voxelab Proxima 8.9-inch 4K monochrome LCD screen will last for up to 2000 hours and allow you to print faster compared to other traditional resin 3D printers.

UV Matrix LED Light Source

Thanks to the UV Matrix 405nm LED light source that distributes light more evenly and disperses less heat on the LCD screen, this 3D printer allows high-precision printing.

‘Residue’ Feature

Under the system settings, there is a print option called Residue that lets you know how many layers you’ve printed with this 3D printer machine. Once you reach a certain printing threshold, you’ll receive a notification to change your FEP sheet. The Residue feature is one of the most significant advantages of the Voxelab Proxima 8.9 that other resin 3D printers lack.

Design

Voxelab Proxima 8.9 is a mid-size 3D printer with an aluminium build plate. The build plate has a slant on top to prevent resin from building up. It rides up and down on two beefy linear rails and one lead screw, allowing stable printing.

The vat is also made of aluminium, which is great for this price point. In addition, it features feet on the bottom, allowing you to put it on your table without worrying about the FEP sheet sitting directly against your tabletop surface.

This budget 3D printer has a touch screen on the front and a USB and Ethernet port on the right side. On the back of the printer, there is a power input jack, exhaust fan, vents, and on/off switch.

Software

The Voxelab Proxima 8.9 is a superb budget printer with the excellent build quality. It is compatible with three different slicing apps — VoxelPrint, Chitubox, and Lychee. VoxelPrint is a good software for getting started but feels quite limited compared to Chitubox or Lychee.

Setup and Print Quality

Like with most resin printers, the setup of Voxelab Proxima 8.9 is hassle-free. All you need to do is follow three simple steps:

  1. Attach the build plate
  2. Loose the build screws
  3. Home the build plate
  4. Tighten the screws, making sure that the build plate is flat up against the LCS screen

With the printer, you’ll also get an accessory box that has everything you need to get it up and running. However, keep in mind that no resin is included.

When it comes to print quality, users deem it amazing. With a 4K monochrome LCD screen, Proxima 8.9 prints more precisely than printers with a 2K LCD screen.

Customer Support

Voxelab’s customer support offers 24/7 after-sales service. If you have any issues with your 3D printer, you can contact Voxelab’s agents by email or phone. Their business hours are Monday to Saturday, 08:00–18:00 (GMT+8). Moreover, the official Voxelab website has a Support section to help solve any issues you might have without contacting an agent.

The Support section includes a Video Centre, After-Sales Policy, FAQ, and Download Centre. However, at the time of writing this review, no videos were available in the Video Centre.

It is worth mentioning that the customer service reviews are mixed. While some users find it horrible, others are satisfied with it. Some users claimed they tried to email customer services, but their email was rejected. On the other hand, others found the Voxellab support team very helpful.

Competitors

Voxelab Proxima 8.9 vs Elegoo Saturn

Voxelab Proxima 8.9 and Elegoo SaturnBoth have the same build volume — 192 x 120 x 200 mm. Their resolution is also the same — 3840 x 2400. Thanks to the 4K monochrome LCD, both printers print at breakneck speeds. The layers take only 1–2 seconds to print compared to conventional LCD 3D printers, which take 7–8 seconds per layer.

We could say that the Proxima 8.9 is meant to be a direct competitor to the Elegoo Saturn. Even looking at these two printers, they have the exact same colour scheme. However, unlike Elegoo Saturn, Voxelab Proxima 8.9 has four bolts mounting system for the build plate, making it more stable.

Moreover, the Proxima has a smaller footprint than Saturn, which is a bonus. When it comes to the price, it is pretty much the same.

Both the Voxelab Proxima 8.9 and the Elegoo Saturn are excellent 3D printers. Ultimately, it comes down to what you need from your printer and what you are looking for in terms of performance.

Voxelab Proxima 8.9 vs Flashforge Foto 8.9

Voxelab Proxima 8.9 supports slicing software such as ChituBox and VoxelPrint, while Flashforge Foto 8.9 supports FlashDLPrint

Furthermore, Voxelab Proxima 8.9 print speed is 17–25 mm/h, while Flashforge Foto 8.9 can print at speeds between 10 to 50 mm/h. When it comes to the build volume, it is the same — 192 x 120 x 200 mm. The build plate on the Proxima is aluminium with a slant on top to prevent resin from building up and is either sandblasted or coated. This gives a texture to help with adhesion.

Overall, both printers provide outstanding product quality and fast printing, so it is hard to decide which performs better.

FAQ

How long does a resin printer LCD last?

There is no definitive answer to this question. The lifespan of a resin printer LCD depends on various factors, such as its quality, the intensity of use, and the overall care of the printer. However, with proper maintenance, an LCD screen on a resin printer should last for many years.

What is the highest-resolution resin 3D printer?

The Phrozen Sonic 8K Mini is the highest-resolution resin 3D printer. However, the Voxelab Proxima 8.9 isn’t far behind. It offers an XY-axis resolution of 47um, making it one of the highest-resolution resin 3D printers on the market.

Are resin printers more accurate?

Yes, resin printers are more accurate than filament printers. While filament printers excel at producing large and sturdier parts, resin printers excel at producing small parts and printing fine details.
