What Is Avira Phantom VPN?

Were you ever curious if somebody can track your internet activity when you connect to a public Wi-Fi network? Considering the movements stacked towards your privacy, it’s an understandable fear. With a virtual private network, you can secure your info from potential threats and receive more online privacy.

Avira’s Phantom VPN was created by one of the most well-known antivirus companies in the world. Avira Operations GmbH & Co. KG was established in 2006 in Tettnang, Germany. Its ancestor, H+BEDV Datentechnik GmbH, was created in 1986

Tjark Auerbach, the founder of Avira Operations, resigned early in 2013 after 27 years working as CEO, leaving behind a corporation with an approximate 9.6% global market share and over 100 million clients. In January 2021, NortonLifeLock bought Avira in a $360 million all-cash deal.

Services and Features Offered by Avira Phantom VPN

Data Encryption and Protocols

In terms of VPN protection and VPN protocols, Avira Phantom performs nicely. Kudos to 256 Advanced Encryption Standard and the OpenVPN protocol. Avira’s Windows, macOS and Android apps use the OpenVPN protocol when you download it directly from their website. If you download it from the Apple App Store, you get IPSec and Ikev2 protocols used by iOS devices.

DNS Protection and Kill Switch

Avira provides the kill switch option as well as DNS protection. This VPN provider makes sure nobody can oversee your DNS requests to send you links to malicious websites or deduce your online activity by maintaining its DNS service. DNS protection service supports both IPv4 and v6 protocols. In addition, the WireGuard protocol is available on the Android version of Avira.

Servers and Locations

The more server locations available, the more likely it is to discover one close, no matter where you are. The number of servers is frequently defined by the number of subscribers to a VPN service. Therefore, more would be better in Avira’s case as well. More servers equal fewer people on each one, providing you with more bandwidth.

Avira Phantom currently offers 1400 VPN servers in 37 countries worldwide in the US, Europe and Asia.

Streaming and Torrenting

Even the best VPNs may struggle to get around Netflix geoblocking. For reliable access, you should ideally have a large number of servers and special streaming features. However, Avira Phantom VPN unblocks Netflix worldwide. Moreover, you can use Avira VPN for streaming content across the US, the UK and Europe.

With this VPN provider, you also have a chance to access HBO Now, Hulu Plus, Amazon instant video, etc. But note that you might face minor problems with streaming.

Unfortunately, there is no detailed information on their website about Avira VPN for torrenting. They use P2P (Peer to Peer) file sharing, a standard way for VPN torrenting.

Available Platforms and Extensions

If you use one of the four dominant platforms, you are lucky! Avira is an available VPN for Windows, macOS, Android and iOS. Nonetheless, you are out of luck if you want to use Avira Phantom VPN on your router or Linux computer system.

Avira Phantom has an excellent Chrome browser extension. The extension routes only your browser traffic to the desired location. Still, it does not protect the traffic with the encryption systems established in VPN protocols.

When it comes to simultaneous connections, Avira Phantom VPN is one of the few choices available that does not restrict the number of devices you want to use on the same account. The given also applies to the free version of this VPN.

Concerning mobile VPN apps, Android and iOS users also get a great price on a monthly phone plan. You get a good baseline VPN, unlimited bandwidth, and as many connected devices as you want for a few euros.

You can also get Avira Phantom VPN apk v9.8.7 (pro version) on the Google Play store. Avira VPN includes a free proxy server and seven days of unlimited traffic with the premium trial.

Avira Phantom VPN Prices and Plans

Monthly plan Annual plan  Mobile plan
5.95 € per month

Cancel anytime.

47.95 € per year

Billed annually. 30-day money-back guarantee

3.95 € per month

Cancel anytime. 30-day money-back guarantee

Avira Phantom VPN Pro option plan falls into the budget group when it comes to services and pricing. It offers fantastic value for money with an inexpensive monthly plan and a very cheap annual plan.

All paid VPN Avira Phantom plans have a 30-day money-back guarantee. If you’re unsatisfied, you can cancel within 30 days and get your money back.

Moreover, there is a free version available. Along with unlimited simultaneous connections, you also get the auto-connect feature, which is easy to use.

However, there are several limits. One of them is the bandwidth restriction — your monthly maximum is 500MB, and it can be upped to 1GB after you sign-up. Sadly, free users don’t get to experience the kill switch feature and customer support.

Speed and Performance

Whatever VPN you choose, chances are it will influence your online browsing experience. For instance, it could increase latency and drop upload and download speeds. We used the Ookla Speedtest tool to analyse connection data rate and latency with and without Avira VPN.

VPN speed test on Ookla without Avira VPN:

Locations  Ping Download speed  Upload speed
London, UK  31 ms 72.26 Mbps 4.90 Mbps
New York, US 109 ms 60.83 Mbps 4.91 Mbps
Fukuoka, Japan  285 ms  45.09 Mbps  4.88 Mbps

VPN speed test on Ookla with Avira VPN turned on:

Locations Ping Download speed Upload speed
London, UK 79 ms 48.94 Mbps 4.65 Mbps
New York, US 172 ms 45.19 Mbps  4.18 Mbps
Fukuoka, Japan  343 ms 38.89 Mbps  4.64 Mbps

We double-checked the results by repeating the tests from a European network centre, but download speeds peaked at 38-45 Mbps despite a connection capacity of 73 Mbps. Avira wasn’t that bad when we compared it to VPN Unlimited in our previous review, where the rate dropped to only 10 Mbps.

After checking the speeds in three locations, we already used up to 82% of secured traffic with the free version of Avira VPN, which is 500 MB.

The Avira free version automatically gives us the nearest location, so if you want to connect to another place, that is only possible if you have an Avira Phantom VPN Pro plan.

Avira VPN doesn’t break any speed records as it’s not one of the fastest VPNs. Still, it was generally sufficient for every location we tested, providing more than enough efficiency for most activities. Given these were only the free version results, a Pro plan would probably perform better overall.

Privacy and Registration Process

Now the real question, is Avira free VPN safe? First, let’s look at Avira’s privacy features. We can see that Avira claims to have a zero-log and strict privacy policy. This VPN is transparent when it comes to the information it tracks.

That said, whether you’re a free user or a premium customer, minimal bandwidth logs and particular diagnostic info is included. The latter is completely optional, and you can disable it within the client.

The best part about Avira’s privacy features is that no private information is recorded. When you use Avira, it does not track your IP address or browsing history. It also does not save any information about the files you download or the web pages you explore. Finally, Avira is not a full zero-logging policy, but it is adequate.

There is a catch though.

Avira Phantom VPN is founded in Germany. There is a slight problem here. Germany has strict data collection rules, which Avira must respect.

The above said could be enough to turn away privacy-conscious people from using this VPN. However, what counts most is that Avira is a secure VPN that does not gather anything personal about you.

In this Avira Phantom VPN review, we are doing the registration process for the free version.

  1. Go to Avira’s official website. You can see two options available: Download for free and Discover Pro. We are going for the free option.
  2. When you click ‘Download for free’, the downloading process will automatically start. In addition, the free version doesn’t require registration, which is excellent.
  3. The next thing is to install the program.
  4. After installation, you are ready to use Avira VPN.
  5. You can open your Phantom VPN and connect to it. However, keep in mind that you are given 500 MB of secured data and can only connect to the nearest locations.

That is it. With only a few clicks, you are all set! If you want to get the best of Avira’s Pro plan, go ahead to their official website and choose your preferred option.

Avira falls short if you try to use customer support for a free version. We could only find the search bar for some basic questions, and that was it. When we wanted to contact Avira’s management for additional questions, the option wasn’t available because they include it only if you’re a subscribed premium user.

Still, even if you are a paying user, you can only reach customer support via email or telephone as there is no 24/7 live chat option available.

Avira Phantom VPN Competitors

Avira Phantom VPN vs ExpressVPN

Avira Phantom VPN supports an unlimited number of simultaneous connections, which is perfect if you have many devices. In contrast, ExpressVPN allows a maximum of five connections to its speedy servers. Moreover, its mobile app is simple to use.

ExpressVPN includes lightning-fast servers with unlimited bandwidth, which is crucial for torrenting. Avira VPN features fast servers suitable for streaming Netflix and Hulu. Still, Avira is not one of the best VPNs for torrenting

Avira Phantom VPN vs CyberGhost

Although Avira Phantom does not openly restrict P2P, its view on torrents is not so clear. On the other hand, because of the large number of P2P servers, CyberGhost is an excellent option for torrenting.

What’s more, CyberGhost is an unquestionable choice for successfully bypassing US geo-restrictions and accessing challenging platforms like Netflix. But the 36+ VPN servers that Avira Phantom provides are limited, and effective unblocking is not promised.

Avira Phantom VPN vs ProtonVPN

ProtonVPN is a fantastic VPN provider in terms of strong encryption and strict privacy policy. That is partially because of its origin, Switzerland, a country known for strict privacy laws.

Regarding Avira Phantom VPN, it is also a good VPN for one’s privacy. The only potential problem is its country of origin, which is Germany.

Avira VPN has very affordable prices, whereas ProtonVPN is a bit more expensive, although it offers more advanced features.

Avira Phantom VPN Reviews Online

Avira scores high when we go through customer reviews. On Trustpilot, Avira VPN has an outstanding 4.6 rating (rated as excellent) out of 24,749 reviews so far. Most of them are positive, but we must not forget that this is a score for the whole company, not just for the Avira Phantom VPN section.

Here we have a few reviews, particularly for the Avira Phantom VPN.

Overall, this VPN has great ratings all over the internet. For example, on the Google Play store, Avira has a 4.4 score. At the same time, its rating on the Apple store is 4.6. From these reviews, we can see that most users are satisfied with Avira’s reliable VPN software.

Wrap Up

There is truly not much to dislike about Avira VPN. It’s affordable, simple and easy to use. You may need to run several tests with the free version before deciding on a subscription. Moreover, a mobile plan is a real bargain!

And while the logging policy is good, it is not flawless. In this Avira Phantom VPN review, we’ve introduced a simple VPN provider that is great for casual browsing and everyday use.

Does Avira VPN work with Netflix?

Yes, it does. Avira Phantom VPN works well with US Netflix. You just shouldn’t be expecting fast speed. But given the number of free VPNs that actually allow you to watch US Netflix, this is terrific news.

How fast is Avira Phantom VPN?

Avira offers decent speeds for its pricing. But providing its users with lightning-fast speeds is not Avira Phantom’s priority.

Is Avira Phantom VPN good for torrenting?

No, it isn’t. This company is not entirely open when it comes to P2P file torrenting. However, it does allow that. Overall, because of the slower speeds, this VPN isn’t optimal for torrenting.

Does Avira Phantom VPN keep logs?

Avira Phantom VPN provides standard-level encryption and efficient performance while claiming no record of your activities. You may use it on as many devices as you want at once.
