Yes, yes, yet another VPN review. The star of tonight’s show – Windscribe VPN. What makes it unique? Many things, indeed. A chatbot named Garry, for starters. Interested in the particularities? Do read on.

In this Windscribe VPN review, we’ll cover the following:

What is Windscribe VPN?

Windscribe is a Canadian virtual private network founded by Yegor Sak in 2015. Its location – just north of Toronto, Ontario. Richmond Hill, to be more specific. This company aims to provide a broadly accessible tool for circumventing censorship whose ease of use doesn’t limit its operational capacity.

Services and Features Offered by Windscribe VPN

A distinctive feature of Windscribe VPN, R.O.B.E.R.T. (Remote Omnidirectional Badware Eliminating Robotic Tool), allows users to customise the list of domains and IP addresses they wish to block, but that’s not all.

This advanced security feature gives you a choice of sites to be blocked, including but not limited to entire lists of websites known for distributing malware, sites that bomb you with ads and trackers, social networks, gambling and pornographic sites. These lists are curated by Windscribe employees in order not to include false positives.

Note that R.O.B.E.R.T. is limited to free users. It comes only with access to the malware list and no more than three user-defined rules.

Unlimited Parallel Connections

Another thing that many Windscribe reviews will admit makes it stand out from the VPN crowd – unlimited simultaneous connections. This doesn’t mean that your entire neighbourhood can freeload off your Windscribe VPN subscription. No, sir.

The bandwidth is monitored algorithmically, so if a user pops up on their radar, an actual person decides whether you’ve been playing nice or not. Acceptable for them is the subscriber’s immediate family using the software – meaning spouse, children and siblings. In-laws? I guess so, if you get along with them.

Windscribe VPN Protocols and Ports

Windscribe VPN utilises the following VPN protocols: IKEv2 (default), OpenVPN (UDP and TCP, both), Stealth and Websocket Stealth.

The WireGuard protocol was also available in the free Windscribe client for PC that I installed, but that might just be it.

To increase your chances of a successful connection in the world of port-restricting networks, Windscribe supports a multitude of ports, namely: 21, 22, 53, 80, 143, 443, 587, 1194, 3306, 8080, 8443, 54783, 65142.

Config Generators

The tech-savvy users who don’t want Windscribe VPN’s apps on their devices or whose devices are not supported by Windscribe have the option of generating configuration files and profiles to still be able to browse safely and with privacy.

The protocols supported for this are OpenVPN, IKEv2, WireGuard and SOCKS5. Do note that a Pro account subscription is necessary before delving into DIY solutions.

Servers and Server Locations

Though they could cut down on the braggy attitude when noting what they have to offer, Windscribe VPN includes a fair number of server locations – over 63 countries and 110 cities.

They stress that no virtual server locations are used – all their servers are where they’re claimed to be, unlike CyberGhost, for example.

One thing to have in mind – the free Windscribe VPN subscriptions offer servers in only 10 of the 63 countries. Those not available will be starred, and you won’t be able to put them in your favourites.

Windscribe VPN’s firewall — what does it do? Not the exact same thing a kill switch does in CyberGhost, ExpressVPN and SurfShark, often regarded as the best VPN services.

The firewall leaves no room for data leaks that might occur in the time window between the VPN connection dropping and the system noting the drop even took place, as it forces all internet traffic to go through the encrypted tunnel. The feature is on by default in Windscribe but can be adjusted to your specific needs.

Port Forwarding

Port forwarding gives you remote access to services on your computer or home network via a connection to Windscribe. The benefits are multiple-protected connection, disguised external IP, and desirable upload speeds when Torrenting, even. The feature will set you back by either a subscription to a Windscribe VPN premium account or the price of a static IP that’s also on offer.

For those planning to venture into VPNs jointly, Windscribe has an option for making team accounts called ScribeForce. It gives you the ability to manage the entire group’s accounts from a single device. The monthly cost comes down to $3 (£2.53) per member.

Available platforms

The list of devices and platforms you can use Windscribe VPN on is extensive. Just really big.

  • Windscribe VPN for Windows, Mac, and Linux

On your computer, VPN clients for Windows, macOS and Linux are available.

On each of the three operating systems, this VPN client creates an encrypted connection, or tunnel, from your computer to Windscribe’s servers. Once connected through this tunnel, you browse the web with an IP address different from the one your ISP had set up for you.

  • Windscribe VPN for Chrome and other browsers

Besides offering a Chrome VPN solution, there are Windscribe VPN extensions for Firefox, Opera and Edge.

In case you use the VPN browser extension solely, only the actions you take within the browser will be made from a shared IP. For all of your internet activity to be disguised, you need the desktop VPN app running, first and foremost.

Windscribe’s VPN for Chrome, Mozilla and other browsers also fends off any invasive actions that social media or other websites take by using trackers, ad beacons, and those ubiquitous Like and Follow buttons.

  • Windscribe’s Mobile VPN Apps

Now for the cellies. Those on their phone can use Windscribe for iOS, Android and Windows Phones.

The benefits of using Windscribe on your phone?

  • Lighter load on your data plan and higher loading speeds, as all the ads and trackers a site usually bombs you with will now be blocked.
  • Privacy from your ISP, which more often than not stores data on you, either to share it with the government or to monetise it.
  • Mobility in combination with secure access to streaming services and ease of mind when accessing public Wi-FI or downloading your favourite content.
  • Windscribe VPN for firestick and other smart TVs

Smart TV users, Windscribe had you in mind, too. You can install the VPN on Amazon Fire TV, Nvidia Shield, or devices that run Kodi.

  • Windscribe VPN for routers

Lastly, users can even set up their routers to provide an encrypted connection to the Internet. Currently supported are DD-WRT, Tomato and Asus routers, with an additional option to buy a custom-built VPN router with Windscribe pre-configured.

Auto Pilot

Windscribe VPN’s browser extensions offer the useful Auto Pilot feature. This determines the optimal server to connect you to in order to maximise your VPN speed. It also bypasses geo-restricted content by switching to a server that lets you stream whatever it is that you wanted to stream. The key thing here is that it’s automatic – you don’t have to do a thing.

Double Hop

An additional advantage of using Windscribe VPN is the Double Hop feature. If you use the desktop application while browsing with the Windscribe VPN’s extension added to the browser (and turned on, for that matter), you are effectively doubling up on your encryption efforts.

This will potentially slow down your connection even further. When I tested how it would compare, using the desktop app only reduced download speed by 40%, and double hopping doubled the loss – my download speed was reduced by 80%. Deciding if the speed loss is worth the additional safety is entirely up to you and your VPN’s purpose.

Windscribe VPN for Torrenting

With the firewall Always-on and you turning your torrent client on only after you’ve turned on Windscribe VPN, there is no chance for your ISP to see what you are doing. You can now safely enjoy the joys of P2P file sharing.

Windscribe VPN Prices and Plans

What’s Windscribe VPN’s pricing? For Windscribe VPN Pro, you can choose the $9 (about £7.60) monthly plan or opt for a $69 (about £58.23) yearly plan that comes down to $5.75 (about £4.85) each month. These Pro subscriptions include unlimited bandwidth.

Plan duration One month 12 months
Plan price (per month) roughly £7.60 roughly £58.23 (£4.85)

Next to these two, there is the build-a-plan option, where you can choose pro locations, with each adding one dollar to your subscription cost. You can also add unlimited data for a dollar a month. There’s a two-dollar subscription minimum.

If you’re used to binge-watching Netflix shows and want to open US/UK libraries wherever you are, spoofing your location is affordable and straightforward with a plan that selects the WINDFLIX location and the unlimited data option. Now, for $2 (circa £1.69) a month, you get unlimited access to your favourite streaming site.

A multitude of payment options is at the user’s disposal. Bitcoin, as mentioned, is for those most concerned with privacy. You can also pay by a card or use the Paymentwall service.

Windscribe VPN for free

Is Windscribe really free? Yes, it is. They offer 2 GB of encrypted web surfing to anyone. What’s more, sharing your email with them will get you 10 GB of VPN access. You do need to confirm this email address, so [email protected] just won’t do this time.

In case these two free deals don’t quench your thirst for encrypted data, Windscribe has a few additional suggestions. You can either Tweet for up to 5 GB of data or refer your friends to Windscribe for free bandwidth or a free Windscribe VPN Pro subscription, even.

All of this won’t do? Then you better hang around their official subreddit, where the company holds promotions, contests and giveaways, or join them on their Discord channel.

Windscribe allows you to cancel your subscription at any time. If you were to skim through their refund policy carelessly, you’d get the impression they have a 30-day money-back guarantee period, when in reality, you get only three days to ponce around the software.

The 30 days mentioned are given to Windscribe, by Windscribe, to make a full refund to anyone who feels is not satisfied with the VPN service and makes a claim within three days after purchasing. The devil’s in the details.

Speed and Performance

Time to talk speed. I’ll begin by noting that my internet connection is fairly fast.

windscribe vpn review | cybercrew

Having installed Windscribe for PC, I let it connect automatically to the server it labelled as the best location. The server was in Amsterdam, specifically. The result, a decrease in download speed by a little under 26%. As for upload speed, the toll was much lower – only 6%.

windscribe vpn review | cybercrew

This little test aside, we must note that grading a VPN on its speed performance is a game of multiple variables, most of them hidden from the average observer. To use a VPN without increasing the rate at which you lose your beautiful lush hair, a healthy connection is necessary, to begin with.

Privacy and Registration Process

The company keeps no logs on connection, no IP timestamps, and no session logs. Windscribe VPN doesn’t monitor your activity.

It does keep an eye on the last time you used the app and the bandwidth used in the 30 days. This is done to make sure you don’t cross the 10 GB free plan limit or see exactly how much bandwidth you and your gang use to prevent any misuse.

The records Windscribe VPN makes are not permanent and get wiped clean regularly.

In their transparency report, the company discloses the exact number of DMCA and law enforcement data requests they complied with, which is zero. You can’t share what you don’t have.

Though they do admit your unwavering trust is a lot to ask for, there are plans to let all technically-oriented Windscribe VPN users confirm the methods they use are safe and efficient.

Windscribe Sign Up Procedure

Right on start, you will be asked whether you want to double up your security efforts by applying two-factor authorisation. If you’re looking for the safest Windscribe login process, you’ll want to use 2FA.

Opting for the free 2 GB will then have you in a dilemma. Do you want to remain anonymous and get just 2 GB, or are you ready to share your email, set up a free account and get five times more?

If you do share your email address, you’ll find Chuck Norris to approve of your decision.

windscribe vpn review | cybercrew

Once you’ve confirmed your email, you can install the desktop application to your computer and start using Windscribe VPN.

Windscribe will want you to know that a VPN for Chrome is also available. They insist that browsing the web using only the desktop app isn’t nearly as safe and private as when you have the additional VPN protection the browser extension provides.

Let’s note that each time you turn the VPN on, your antivirus might react. In my case, this didn’t interfere with Windscribe VPN’s normal functioning.

Customer Support

Windscribe VPN’s support page lets you choose between resolving the issue at hand on your own, by using their site’s self-help section, or by looking for technical support.

The self-help section consists of dedicated setup guides for all available devices and platforms, an FAQ list providing basic info about the company and its service, and a searchable knowledge base with lots of articles about more specific subjects.

In case you’re in need of technical support, you can check the official subreddit with over 20 thousand members, give Garry a chance to help you out, or submit a ticket if your issue persists. Windscribe VPN doesn’t offer live 24/7 customer support. At least not in human form.

Who is Garry? He is a chatbot who didn’t earn that name for being garrulous. He is quite concise when providing answers to your questions.

But, Garry might not understand what you’re asking about, despite trying his best. He might be way off, even. In that case, you’ll have to contact Windscribe’s human customer satisfaction team by email.

Having humans answer your questions via email isn’t the fastest way of resolving user issues, to say the least, and this is undoubtedly something Windscribe VPN should aim at improving. Most users will confirm that you rarely get an answer in less than two days.

Windscribe VPN Competitors

Skimming through Windscribe VPN’s official website, you might find a “compare Windscribe with…” page. A long list of competitors will be before you, and clicking on a link will further take you to a comparison presented by Windscribe.

Be careful, as this list is dated. The authors themselves note things might have changed since the last website update. This finding supports the many Reddit comments and user reviews that note how Windscribe’s official website is begging for an update.

Windscribe VPN vs Hotspot Shield VPN

Windscribe VPN Hotspot Shield VPN
Server countries 63+ 80
Simultaneous connections Unlimited 5
Minimum monthly price Free Free

First and foremost, Windscribe allows users to connect to its many servers on an unlimited number of devices, and Hotspot Shield VPN limits users to five simultaneous connections

Second, Windscribe VPN might offer a better free option, as the 10 GB you get by sharing your email will last you a month, meaning you can spend it all in one day if necessary. With Hotspot Shield VPN, the daily limit is set to 500 MB.

In terms of customer support, both VPNs are limited. Hotspot Shield might have live chat, but it’s available to paying customers only.

Windscribe VPN vs PureVPN

Windscribe VPN PureVPN
Server countries 63+ 78
Simultaneous connections Unlimited 10
Minimum monthly price Free ≈ £1.68

Though PureVPN offers more servers, Windscribe doesn’t limit parallel connections. The Canadian VPN provider also seems to have invested itself more deeply into VPN protocols and is advancing with the use of WireGuard in its Windows client.

As for the parts where it could take PureVPN’s example, Windscribe VPN could offer a live chat feature and extend the narrow three-day money-back guarantee.

Windscribe VPN vs IPVanish

Windscribe VPN IPVanish
Server countries 63+ 75+
Simultaneous connections Unlimited Unlimited
Minimum monthly price Free ≈ £2.81

While IPVanish offers no free trial, Windscribe VPN gives its potential customers the option of connecting to the Internet through a tunnel with strong AES-256 encryption for free. You can also get around the 2 GB data cap by sharing your email, getting 10 GB or more.

If you’re aiming at as many simultaneous connections as possible, both of these VPN providers might be what you’re looking for. If you need a VPN for Netflix, Windscribe seems like a more stable solution, plus it’s more affordable than IPVanish.

Wrap Up

Having gone through the entirety of this Windscribe VPN review, we hope you’ve had most, if not all, of your concerns, addressed.

Taking just a peek at the vast list of privacy features Windscribe offers, some very specific, others simply ticking the boxes any candidate for the title of best free VPN software really must tick, we can say that Windscribe is a very versatile and secure VPN

With specialised Netflix servers and good torrenting capabilities, that users usually turn to VPN technology for, it will likely satisfy the needs of most. In case you have an appetite for less than 10 GB of data a month, you might even find it to be an excellent alternative to any paid VPN solution.

Why is Windscribe so slow?

Do make sure your connection is suited for the purpose you have in mind and connect to the server location that’s closest to you, geographically. This will minimise at least one of the many impediments on your way to achieving high VPN speed, be it with Windscribe or any other.

Does Windscribe hide your IP?

Yes, it does, by connecting you, together with many of its other users, to the Windscribe server in the location of choice. Your activity is then mixed with the activity of all the users connected to this Windscribe VPN server, letting you blend with the crowd. This covers your tracks from the often nosy ISP, as well.

Is Windscribe safe?

Windscribe VPN was designed and built ground up with the user’s privacy in mind. Next to this, it uses strong encryption algorithms in its desktop applications and browser extensions, if not the strongest – in a nutshell, it’s a safe VPN.

Unlike many other VPN providers, Windscribe uses mail servers of their own to deliver information to the customer. Though less convenient than using a mailing service, this leaves no room for customer details leaking to third parties.

Does Windscribe VPN keep logs?

Certain info needs to be logged for a function to be available to its users. This goes for all properly performing software. Windscribe’s software needs to save some details about your activity to work properly, but, simply put, Windscribe VPN doesn’t keep logs on anything that leads to you being identified.
