If you’ve ever opened a bank account in the UK, you are probably already familiar with sort codes. Used exclusively in the UK and Irish banks, these six-digit number sequences help identify the bank and branch where an account is held. They are used to correctly route money from one UK bank account to another and, as a result, represent an integral part of UK banking.

Sort codes are usually made up of three number pairs, each pointing to a different piece of information needed to complete a successful domestic money transfer.

The first two digits in the sort code, also known as the lead pair, typically identify the bank in which the account is held. The four remaining digits help narrow down the specific bank branch where the account was opened.
